Boss SD-1
Description
Here is a modified Boss Super Overdrive for you! I was on the DIY wave for a couple of years around 2010, and built a few pedals. I also bought 3 used SD1s to tinker with that circuit. Stock, it is very similar to a Tube Screamer, the most prominent difference is that the SD1 has assymetrical clipping. And they are a lot easier to find cheap on the used market. So I did some research on the web, and among my findings were a book by Brian Wampler, where I found a lot of mods for this pedal. I modified all the 3 SD1s I bought, and this is the one I liked the most (I am not sure what happened to the other two, I might have given them away...). Unfortunately, I cannot remember excactly what I changed, and my documentation is lost. However - what I remember is this: I took out C6, so there is more treble and air coming through it. I also changed the high pass filter, giving it more bass. So there is not such a prominent mid hump like in the original circuit, or in a TS. But still, there is a mid boost, just a lot wider. Then I changed the diodes, for a mix of germanium and silicon, and then I stacked opamps. I might have done more to it, but I don't remember. Anyway, the result was a pedal that has been on my pedalboard ever since. When playing it in it's physical state, I like it with low drive settings, and on the dark side, with volume high, to beef up and boost leads. It stacks nicely with other pedals too, but preferably with a more transparent and less compressed overdrive after it. But it's also great after a fuzz. These profiles have 3 tone settings (3, 5 and 7) and 8 drive settings (0-7). Any further than that on the drive knobs does not change the sound, except that the noise floor gets worse. Like I said - I prefer it on the darkest setting, but of course, it depends on the guitar and amp too. I like this pedal very much, and I hope you like it too :-D Reamped Through a Palmer Trave at 12,1 dBu. Trained at 200 epochs. If you like my work, donations are welcome @ buymeacoffee.com/tkvellen
