Musikding "The Range"

Description

Here is a clone of a classic piece of gear: The Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster. I built a Musikding DIY kit of this about 13 years ago, but I never put it to regular use, as it didn't play very well together with other pedals. For a long time, I didn't know where it was, but oh, the joy when it reappeared as I forced open a jammed drawer just the other day :-D The list of great guitarists that have used the Rangemaster is long. Brian May, Rory Gallagher, Marc Bolan and Tony Iommi, to name a few. And Eric Clapton supposedly used it on that famous Beano album too. Today, we have lots of clones and variations of it, with and without a Germanium Transistor. My pedal has a germanium AC128 in it, btw. But what does it do? Excactly what it says: It boosts treble! And it loves humbuckers and dark amps! The Musikding variant has three different modes – the original treble boost, and two modes that let more bass through. Or shall we say more mids, perhaps? My profiles are labeled Treble, Mid and Full, but don't expect a transparent full range boost in the «full» mode, it still has a lot of treble and not that much bass at all. Dallas originally made this booster to brighten up darker british amps, like the earlys AC30's and Marshalls. It works best when the amp is already overdriven. This translates very well to the digital world of NAM, and it can do wonders when placed before a dark, overdriven amp profile. I especially like it in front of my AC30 profiles – it makes the Normal channel sound like a whole different beast. You can find the AC30 here: https://tonehunt.org/Raksha/4e216642-f358-47b1-a895-a4a8402368bf Put them together, crank it, and Brian May may stop by, and ask why you have stolen his gear! It also sounds great with dark Plexi's and even dark Fenders. If you play it into a clean profile, you will probably not like it very much, as it sounds thin. So you need to further push something that overdrives. And the more the amp overdrives, the better the most trebly part of the Rangemaster set will sound. The Rangemaster adds a little distortion to the signal by itself, but a found it worked surprisingly well to abuse it by adding input gain in the plugin instance that carries the pedal.
