This is my new set of profiles taken from my Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz. * * * There are two reasons I have done this over again. First of all, my old interface was not a very good one - 2nd gen Focusrite Scarlet - so these are done with an Audient iD4, which improves the overall sound with both a better noise floor and improved fidelity. Second, and just as important: I used to reamp at around 12 dBu. I have over time come to the conclusion that this is too hot – it's like putting a booster before whatever you want to capture. I have settled at a reamp level of 6 dBu instead, which I think is a more realistic level, as it seems to be more similar to when you plug your guitar directly into a pedal or an amp. Which brings me onto the problem of calibration. It is possible to use input calibration with these profiles. However, I suggest NOT to. When you do so, the plugin adds the input level that I was so happy to get rid of. So, for a 12 dBu interface, I would just leave it there without calibration. Or at least go by ear, not by numbers. YMMV... * * * About the Axis Fuzz: Roger Mayer was the guy that took care of Jimi Hendrix' gear. At one point, Jimi wanted an alternative to the Silicon Fuzz Face he used at the time, and Roger – the pedal wizard – came up with this circuit, and put it into one of the encolures of Jimi's Fuzz Faces. It was given it's name after the track Axis, Bold as love, and was used often from then, especially on Band of Gypsies. This fuzz is smoother and more polite than a Fuzz Face, and doesen't even come near the brutality of a Big Muff. One of it's strengths is that it leaves the natural tone of your guitar very much unaltered – there is no mid scoop here, like in so many other fuzz pedals. It is pretty bright too – on low fuzz settings, it almost acts like the famous Dallas Arbiter treble booster from the same period. Increase the fuzz, and it gets fatter. At high fuzz settings, it is still bright, but deliciously fat enough to deliver the goods. It's natural brightness means it works very well with neck pickups, where other fuzzers may be too dark, IMO. Now fuzz, in the NAM world has some problems, because the interface is between the guitar and the profile. So you don't get the excact same effect of riding your guitar's volume knob for cleanup. However, I find that it does cleanup very well, even though the change in impedance is not the same. I think the best way is to take some volume off the input in the NAM plugin, rather than on your guitar – it's a little less noisy when you do it in the plugin. This fuzz also works very well with many amps, even Vox/Matchless style amps. It goes without sayin' that it is magical with a Marshall Plexi, as that is was it was developed to work with. And I have to say – again – that the best version I know of the Plexi is the one recently released from Neutron Audio – to me that pairing is a sonical Nirvana, nothing less <3 So now – get yer guitar out and find your inner Jimi! * * * Technical: Reamped with a Palmer Trave into an Audient iD4 at 6 dBu Trained at 400 epochs in standard mode ESR in the range of 0,0066 to 0,018 If you like it and use it, feel free to support my work @ buymeacoffee.com/tkvellen Have fun!
